Monthly Virtual Meeting via Zoom: Dr. Stan Wilson

  • 09/23/2020
  • 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Dr. Stan Wilson will speak on "Global Sea Level Rise: Causes, Consequences, and What We Can Do About It"

Global sea level is currently rising at an average rate of about an inch and a half per decade, and this rate is accelerating by about 3%.  This is due to thermal expansion of the oceans and melting of ice sheets, both the result of a warming globe.  Norfolk, Miami, Boston and Annapolis are already dealing with an increased frequency in the flooding of low-lying areas.  Projections for the end of the century range anywhere from two feet, if we make significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, to five feet if we do nothing.  It is critical that we anticipate these projections by making corresponding plans for a resilient coastal infrastructure.

Dr. Wilson spent his 40-year career working as a manager of ocean programs, first with the Office of Naval Research, then NASA and finally the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.  He has been responsible for a variety of programs ranging from oceanographic satellites to robotic profiling floats, which together have provided the capability to observe how the warming global oceans and melting ice sheets are contributing to sea level rise.
